Statement by composer Andrew Wagstaff
"I began working with Ati about 10 years ago on the SpaceRider series, when we had a mutual friend realize we both wore space suits while making our art: I in music, and Ati in the SR series. Ten years later, it is still a delight to work with Ati, and score these images.
The undefined, futuristic feel of the SpaceRider character in general, coupled with the black and white visual and the rural setting of Ati's latest installment, I decided to attempt to score it using a Mellotron as my basis: hoping to achieve a retro-yet-futuristic sound. For all of the SR series, I usually record a slow moving and drony harmonic progression covering the whole piece. To add drama, and highlight the on-screen action, I then go back and overdub sounds to match. When everything seems to mesh, I can then go back and sporadically drop out the underlying drone if and when appropriate, to add variety in the overall dynamic of the piece. Adding the narration, wind, rain, horses, sheep, bells, birds, etc where appropriate is a bit like working a puzzle, but having loads of fun doing it. I think this is my favorite one yet!"
