About this exhibition

Event Horizon was a solo show at the University Art Museum, University at Albany, from February 1 to April 3, 2011. It took its title from Ati Maier's 3-D animation Event Horizon (2010).

For the animation she reworked the landscape of her painting Savvy (2010), digitally distorting and warping it in multiple layers, and then drew directly in 3-D: three landscapes, each in eleven slightly distorted layers, a conceptual connection to M-theory, in which eleven dimensions are identified. The idea behind it is that everything is built out of single lines.

“What strikes me most about the ‘event horizon’ of a black hole is that it’s the ultimate boundary. Nothing can escape beyond the event horizon, not even light. I’m trying to reach that boundary; I’m trying to get as close to it as possible.” — Ati Maier, in an interview with Corinna Ripps Schaming, December 2010
